Plan the project

Develop the Work Breakdown Structure

  • Outline all major deliverables

  • Outline all tasks needed to complete each major deliverable

  • Outline all sub-tasks needed to complete each task

  • If your project is very complex, you may need project management software to formally outline this component in conjunction with a wiki (i.e., mashup the two tools)

Develop the Schedule/Gantt Chart

  • Slot all the major deliverables, tasks, and sub-tasks into a schedule/Gantt chart

Analyze and Optimize Resources and Schedule

  • Make sure no one is overloaded with work

  • Make sure the three key contraints of your project (budget/time/quality) are well balanced

  • Look for ways to optimize the budget and time contraints without hurting the quality

  • Wikis work well for this part of the planning process--the individual Team Member Pages can make it very easy to see who is working on what and when, which also comes in handy when it's time to track and manage the project

Develop a Risk Management Plan

  • Once all the tasks and resources have been analyzed and optimized figure out risks to the successful completion of the project and plan how to deal with them

  • Wikis are great for this activity for a couple reasons:

    • Facilitate brainstorming risks and how to deal with them

    • Make disseminating, storing, and contolling multiple versions of policies/plans easy
